Celebrating Love + Climbing

Look, we know every love story is different and special, but #bkblove stories are our favorite. That’s why, in honor of the sap and sweetness of Valentine’s Day, we collected a variety of #bkblove stories to share with our community. Members sent us emails and responded to Instagram posts with their stories of fun friendships, badass belaytionships, and newfound love (of climbing and beyond). Read below to enjoy sappy tales of true love and good vibes happening everyday at BKB. Note: most names and social media usernames have been redacted because, you know, privacy.

Climbing together.

FEELIN’ THE LOVE.

“We met at a clinic with Sasha DiGiulian at BKB Queensbridge about 2 years ago. As part of the clinic, Sasha separated us into two groups for a game of add-on, and [my now girlfriend] was on my team. A few months later, I texted her to see if she was up for a trip to the Gunks, and we started dating that summer. Now we live together in Denver!”BKB engagement

“[We] had been friends before, but in January 2018 we started consistently climbing together at BKB Chicago, driving from Hyde Park up to West Loop. Now I consider her one of my closest friends! Since then we’ve climbed in Yosemite together and plan on even more trips! Despite us living in different cities now, we still stay connected. ❤️”

“I met my boo at BKB Somerville. I sent his project; he sent my heart. 😘”

“Met my absolute soulmate [at BKB].”

“I’d say surprising me with taking the lead class as my birthday gift certainly counts [as #bkblove]!”

“After finding that mini golf was packed last year on Valentine’s Day, and we weren’t going to have too much fun, my boyfriend took me to bkb where we climbed almost alone until midnight! Happy Valentine’s!”

Partner challenge climb

“Family surprised me by taking me to BKB on my 16th birthday and I love them so much for it. We had a great bonding experience and tried something new.”

“She hit on me pretty hard. My friend approved. The rest is history.”

BECOMING SUPERHUMAN TOGETHER.

“I developed a spectacular belaytionship with my best friend at BKB Chicago. Through her, I met my boyfriend at BKB Chicago, too. It’s 3 years later and we’ve moved to Colorado together to pursue a life of adventure!” A couple on a climbing challenge together

“Here’s a beautiful story of growth and friendship. My spirit animal and I met about a year ago while beginning our independent journeys to overhaul our unhealthy lifestyles and change our lives for good. In the last year we each lost 80 plus pounds, gained a real, true self-care regimen, and conquered a ton of our fears . Two months ago I asked her to join me at Brooklyn Boulders for Intro to Climbing class to celebrate our success and feel fit and strong in our new bodies. It bonded us even more. We found a new passion together and haven’t looked back. Looking forward to years more friendship with my girl and a LOT more problems to solve! :)”

“I have given up hope on getting emotionally attached to anyone until I met [my partner] a year ago at BKB Somerville. He shined through the clouds of my life like a glowing sun. Now we have been together for five months and I hope the climbing rope that’s connecting us never gets untied.”

“All in all, BKB played a pretty big role in giving us a place to share common ground to get to know each other, and the climbing we were able to do there helped us both make our dreams a little bigger.”

#BKBLOVE IS DYNO-MIGHT.

Two climbers doing a partner challenge“[We] met online and decided BKB would be the perfect place for a first date since we both climbed. We chatted in between problems and I injured myself showing off on a dyno—totally worth it.

Two years later our climbing is strong and our relationship stronger.”

HER RESPONSE:

When i first saw [him] I thought, “Oh no, I’ve made a terrible mistake. He’s cute and he is going to judge me for my climbing ability.” But he was supportive and didn’t care what grade I was climbing. Also, I WAS impressed by the dyno.”

CAN’T FORGET GALENTINE’S!

One last story we had to share comes from a couple of badass ladies who share a belay-tionship so beautiful, it got its own Instagram account. For a while now, we have followed the inspiring and supportive account of Coconut & Cantaloupe, a pair of women scientists.2 female scientists' belaytionship

They met in their PhD program, were each others’ first climbing buddy in Chicago, and have now been working on problems in the lab and on the walls together for 3 years! We send our thanks to Coconut and Cantaloupe for giving us a window into this wonderfully positive and encouraging belaytionship.
