To our BKB community,
Over the last decade, our community has proven time and time again that no matter what this world throws at us there are always opportunities to rise. It is ingrained in our human nature to adapt and thrive in changing environments and adventurers happen to live and breathe this mantra. Like many of you, our team has made the most of every opportunity to stay connected, to train together, to climb homemade walls and kitchen islands and fireplace mantles, and to dream boundlessly about what lies ahead. As we all look forward to the day that we can open our doors and climb together again at Brooklyn Boulders, I wanted to update you all on the ways we have been working to make the most of the opportunities before us now.
First, I want to tell you a bit about what we’ve been doing internally to support our team members. Thanks to the support from members like you, we’ve been able to find new ways to support our team during this time, including a newly established Professional Development Fund. We’ve distributed almost $20,000 in awarded funds to give dozens of facility staff members the opportunity to enroll in certification courses in Project Management, Human Resources, Personal Training and more. If you’re interested in learning more about how we’ve worked to provide our team with security during these uncertain times, you can find my last letter here.
As we work to keep our community healthy and happy, we’re offering daily live-streamed classes on Zoom and Instagram Live with a growing calendar of group fitness classes and workshops, including Exploring Acroyoga at Home and a virtual take on one of our all time member favorites, Climbers’ Core.
With a little one of my own at home, I know first hand that keeping our kids active and engaged is more important than ever, so our team has also developed online versions of our best-selling youth programs for children of all ages. With millions of American families feeling the economic impact of the virus, we’ve made the decision to offer our interactive programming on a Contribute-What-You-Can pricing model. No matter what your budget is for keeping your household active and connected at this time, we’re in it together.
At BKB we’ve always been committed to advancing the sport in innovative and differentiated ways. In 2009, we were one of the first to bring climbing into a city center and we set out to embrace art and culture in ways that hadn’t been done before. Paying attention to the changing work landscape, we quickly made the decision to add collaborative workspaces to our clubs. Along the way we’ve experimented with virtual reality, developing new competition formats and, most recently, integrating technologies and recovery methodologies that have not yet been widely adopted in the world of climbing. This way of thinking is part of our DNA and it’s part of what makes BKB special. With this opportunity to reset, it should come as no surprise that we’ve been heads down working on the next ways we can innovate together.
In the coming weeks, we will unveil more of what we’ve been working on but here are the tenets driving us – we will continue to embrace technology and what it can do to enhance the member experience in and out of facility, we will be increasingly member-centric and will increase our investments in cleanliness and staff-training while streamlining our offerings to protect the member experience, we will build additional facilities to not only strengthen the presence of BKB in our existing cities but to serve as complements to our existing clubs, we will remain deeply dedicated to our local communities, helping as many people in need as we can, and, as always, we will continue to become superhuman together.
Above all, I want to thank you, our community. Thank you for your enthusiastic engagement as we work to keep our community together and for your support through maintained memberships, pack and gift card purchases. Many have asked how to contribute, and there are several ways you can join in on the support here.
Thank you for sticking with us and staying connected. We are the community.
Talk soon + climb on,
Chief Executive Officer
