What is Gluten-Free?

Aug 30, 2015Brooklyn Boulders

Which diet is for you? As studies are usually publicized after the pique of trending diets, it’s a definite challenge to find what fits your lifestyle and your uniquely beautiful body.
Today, let’s talk gluten-free: what is gluten? What do gluten-free people eat? Who do they think they are? Who am *I*, really? And other in/finite questions.

WHAT IS GLUTEN?
A protein found in grains such as wheat, barley, rye, and triticale.
A gluten-free diet is a diet that excludes the protein gluten. This diet regime is used by those affected by Celiac Disease, those with a genetic predisposition preventing the digestion of gluten.

PROS: It can help prevent diabetes if you eat whole foods (veggies, grains, meats) that aren’t processed, and it constrains you to eat higher quality grains, like quinoa. Generally, being gluten-free can make one more conscious about the quality of their consumption.
CONS: It’s difficult to adjust when one realizes how much convenient and fast foods utilize breads, pastas, and processed glutinous ingredient (re: 99 cent pizzas, burgers, sandwiches, fries)! You have to be careful to get the fiber and vitamins you need, especially with the rise of gluten-free snacks, which are often less healthy than non-gluten free snacks and have higher calories (chips, cookies, etc.).

If We Went On A Gluten-Free Dinner Date, I Would Make…:

Appetizer: Guacamole Deviled Eggs

Entree: Sesame Salmon Burgers

Dessert: Gluten-free Lavendar Pistachio Cake

Best After-Climb Snack: Blueberry Ginger Granola with Lemon

Not-So-Guilty Midnight Munchies: Cardamom and And Almond Chia Pudding

All for you, honey bunny.
Also: no matter the diet, there are several things you can do to stay aware of how food affects your body, energy levels, and moods.
Keep a food journal  to  keep track of how much you ate of what and when allows you to fine-tune the maximize what you consume to optimize your lifestyle.
Align your diet with your exercise regimen, and maintain a stable sleep cycle to keep your beautifully healthy body.
