Meet the New Setter: Oliver Miska

Who are you and how did you get to Brooklyn?
Who am I? I’m from Seattle. I’m a NYU graduate student starting this fall in the English and American literature program.

How long have you been climbing?
I’ve been climbing for four and a half years – I started at the climbing gym at University of Washington. Climbing made me function socially – somewhat. At least, function more than not function, compared to how I’ve been a hermit in the past.
It’s definitely changed me in that way. I didn’t know the medium to be social through since I didn’t drink or party,but I did a lot of studying. Climbing is my social outlet but also my physical outlet. it’s kind of what kept me with it.

What’s your climbing philosophy?

Climbing is an endless metaphor for life…but what I like is that moment when I fall, I like to come off the fall knowing how I could have done it. I like learning something from when you fail, trying things you’d never expect to work.

I don’t read beta well, which sometimes gets me into a shit-storm, but I’m more of a feeler. I feel a lot of things.
How long have you been route setting?
For about four years. I think of myself more of a route setter than a climber now, because I like to make things that are difficult. It’s not as important if I can actually climb the problem, I care more about making interesting, difficult situations and creating good boulder problems.
I started setting at Seattle Bouldering Project (SBP) and ropes at Seattle Vertical World. I’ve also set in Europe with the French National team, setting boulders for them to train for the world cup.

How has your setting style evolved over the years?
My attitude towards route setting has progressed. At first, I was stubborn about changing things and the sequence, but in the past year, I’ve gotten over that. Now it’s more about the crew, the climb and the people that we’re setting for – it’s about the community.
I’ve always been good at meat wrapping and volume climbing, compression blocks. The style at SBP is heavy on volumes, so my style has been 80% volumes. It’s been changing though,
What are you most excited about for BKB?
I’m excited to have a community and a family here in Brooklyn and so far it’s been amazing! I got off the plane and came straight here. Its a nice to have a home away from home.
