The Science of Movement

We take a lot for granted until it’s gone– including the ease of twisting and balancing of our bodies and limbs towards the places we want to go. Laban Movement Analysis, or the science and study of movement, breaks things down into 4 categories:

  • Body connectivity & coordination (Bartenieff Fundamentals)
  • Effort (Energetic dynamics)
  • Shape
  • Spatial harmony

The approach is multidisciplinary, drawing from sciences such as kinesiology, anatomy, psychology, and more. It’s also used by dancers, musicians, athletes, physical therapists.
Let’s break these categories down a little more:

I. BODY
How your body connects: which parts are moving, which parts are influencing each other, and the overall structure of movement. This includes: dynamic alignment, core support, rotary factor, weight transference, & breath support.

II. EFFORT
How the movement is executed with respect to inner intention.
That is, punching someone and reaching for a cup requires the same movement pattern, but the factors of strength, control and timing transform the overall movement and intention of an extended arm.

III. SHAPE
The flow, levels, and movement of a body’s overall shape within and responding to its environment. yoga waves
IV. SPACE
Motion in connection to its environment, or movement in geometric forms.
