Amped to Climb: Jon Sedor's Climbing Questionnaire

Remember the video of Jon Sedor climbing a V4 with only one hand? You may have been wondering who he is. Now’s your chance to find out more.
jon sedor
Jon Sedor started climbing when he was a sophomore in high school. During his last week in high school in May of 2007, Jon had a serious accident that left him an amputee. Jon lost his dominant left hand. He underwent a total of three surgeries, including two amputations, but Jon never considered giving up on his dreams. He went to Skidmore College for art, and is now an illustrator and painter, and holds a MFA the School of Visual Arts, despite switching hands only seven years ago.
It wasn’t until two years ago that Jon began climbing again as an amputee. Currently, he doesn’t climb regularly with a prosthetic, but he’s in the process of designing a climbing device for upper extremity amputees. Personally, Jon has been working hard to send routes never thought before possible for an arm amputee. But off the walls, Jon is helping develop and grow the Paraclimbing community around his home state of Ohio. Disability, according to Jon, is only a state of mind. His goal is to bring awareness to society that climbing is possible for anyone to pursue. Jon is a sponsored athlete by Evolv, EPIC bar, Blurr Stuff, FrictionLabs, and Giddy Organics.
Here’s Jon’s Climbing Questionnaire:
What is the quality every climber needs?
In my opinion there are two qualities: perseverance, and self-discipline.

What is your greatest regret?
I don’t really regret anything, but I do wish that I started climbing again sooner after losing my hand, rather than waiting until only two years ago.

What is your greatest fear?
I’m most afraid of failure.

What is your favorite mundane task?
Folding laundry…seriously.

What do you consider the most overrated virtue?
Hmm…they all seem somewhat important or decent to attempt to follow, but I’d have to say continence because I had no idea it was virtuous to control your bodily functions. I thought that sort of goes without saying.

On what occasion do you lie?
I don’t lie. Lying always leads to more drama. I’m never stoked on drama.

What kind of car do you drive?
A two door 2006 Honda Civic.

Your greatest vice?
Dr. Pepper or Diet Coke. You can never go wrong with either.

Loose chalk, or chalk ball?
Loose chalk all the way!

Which living person do you most despise?
Despite me not liking particular individuals; I can’t think of anyone I despise.

Which living person do you most admire?
I’d say there are two people – Tommy Lanigan-Schmidt and James Clark. Both were my professors in graduate school; they not only taught me a ton about art, but also about life and pursuing your passions.

What or who is the greatest love of your life?
My partner Tana; I’m beyond lucky to have her in my life.

What is the trait you like least about yourself?
I get super anxious when I’m under pressure.

Which talent would you most like to have?
It would be awesome to have a talent of learning other languages, or speaking multiple languages.

What is your current state of mind?
I do my best to maintain a positive state of mind. You never know when the curtain will fall, so why not enjoy it while you can.

Boulder, Top-Rope, Trad or Sport?
I prefer bouldering, without a doubt, but I believe it’s good to be well-rounded and do multiple styles of climbing. I’m hoping to lead my first sport route since losing my hand this coming spring, and I definitely want to learn about placing gear for trad!

Which words or phrases do you most overuse?
Stoked, psyched, word, dope, awesome, and the list can go on and on…

If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be?
I honestly wouldn’t change a thing. I’m by no means perfect and I’m always striving to make positive adjustments in my life, but it’s important to be happy with yourself. Just my two cents.

Where would you like to live?
I miss living in Brooklyn, but I’d like to live in Seattle or the Bay Area. The Bay Area has a really awesome art scene too.

What do you most value in your friends?
I value their undying support, honesty, and loyalty. I hope I provide the same qualities for them.

Who are your favorite writers?
I wish I had more time to read, in general, but my favorite writers would be: Anthony Burgess, John Long, Henry Rollins, Kurt Vonnegut, Hunter S. Thompson, and Dr. Seuss.

How would you like to die?

Peacefully would be nice.
