Hadley hails from Texas and is currently studying applied linguistics at Columbia University on the Upper West Side. Born into a family with four brothers, she’s always been the odd girl out – so she fits right in with our (previously) all-male route setting crew at BKB.
Get to know Hadley a bit better by reading her Proust-like questionnaire for climbers:
What is the quality every climber needs? Sense of adventure.
What is your greatest regret? I don’t practice regret. Even the things that I’ve done that weren’t good ideas have been valuable learning experiences. Regret is a longing for what isn’t and can’t be; I’d rather dwell on what is and what might be if I am to take my life experiences into account.
What is your greatest fear? Heights…not really. It’s being stuck, not necessarily physically (although that is scary too) but the idea of being stuck and not growing or learning or getting better at things anymore.
What is your favorite mundane task? I kind of like washing dishes. I find it cathartic.
What do you consider the most overrated virtue? Presentability/Put-togetheredness.
On what occasion do you lie? About my age.
What kind of car do you drive? A blue one with two wheels that I power with my legs.
Your greatest vice? Mediocre television…I have no self-control.
Loose chalk, or chalk ball? Loose chalk.
Which living person do you most despise? Not sure I can choose a specific single person, but generally people who practice (especially habitual and systematic) oppression. The type of people who turn children into soldiers and girls into prostitutes.
Which living person do you most admire? My maternal grandparents. I know it’s really two people, but I couldn’t choose. They both are some of the most generous loving people I know and between the two of them they are able to build/make/fix anything. Also, my grandfather has been a perpetual help in the tool search as far as setting tools go.
What or who is the greatest love of your life? Gilbert Blythe from Anne of Green Gables
What is the trait you like least about yourself? My impatience with myself and others.
Which talent would you most like to have? The uncanny ability to learn languages with wild ease and speed.
What is your current state of mind? Blurry.
Boulder, Top-Rope, Trad or Sport? I’m most comfortable on Top-Rope and Sport, but I really want to improve my bouldering, so I can climb more powerful stuff, and greatly want to improve my Trad climbing. I want to do big wall stuff.
Which words or phrases do you most overuse? Profane ones.
If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be? I would take advice better…including my own.
Where would you like to live? On a farm near the mountains.
What do you most value in your friends? Authenticity and the ability to be myself around them.
Who are your favorite writers? J.D. Salinger, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Annie Dillard, G.K. Chesterton, Walker Percy.
How would you like to die? Doing something courageous.
