HAUNTS: East Room

newheader

East Room is one of those venues that develops something of a legacy within months of its opening. It’s not difficult to understand why. When it first opened in 2014, the bar, club and performance venue filled a whole left by the much beloved, kind of dive-y and now-defunct Bonny’s. Although East Room is a lot cleaner, nicer and larger than its late-night, Logan Square predecessor, it quickly matched the energy so many missed.

So what exactly sets East Room apart? It’s a combination of things: the excellent, often progressive music selection, the diversity of its patrons, and its unabashed love of dancing. In a neighborhood consumed with fine dining and craft cocktails, East Room channels Chicago at its purest roots – true fun over anything else.

Claire, our Assistant Operations Manager of Retail and Marketing, first discovered East Room through word-of-mouth from friends who worked in the same building and took on various roles at the then-new establishment. She was there for opening night. Since then, East Room became one of Claire’s favorite nightlife destinations and it was an easy selection for HAUNTS. “If I collected every hour back I’ve spent there in the past couple of years, I’d know another language,” she joked. Not a really hard one, like Arabic, but probably French.” She regularly visit the space for friends’ birthday parties, DJ sets, and events thrown by nightlife collectives like Young Girl Party.

But East Room is more than just a regular nightlife spot. For Claire, it also connects more deeply to her profound love of music. “[Music has] shaped my social life and surrounded me with like-minded people whose friendships I really value,” she said. “Also, I can’t imagine living somewhere without access to all of the talent that comes through this city.”

Here at Brooklyn Boulders, we value the myriad ways music can and does connect to our lives. From our Front Desk Mixtapes (one of which Claire created) to our Beats at BKB DJ sets to our live performances, music is integral to how we grow community within our facility. “The parallels are in feeling like you belong somewhere,” Claire offered. “It’s important for everyone to feel that, whether they find it at a show or bouldering … or both.”

WHAT SHE SAYS:

“Given its stumbling distance from my apartment, it has turned into a regular hangout.”
