So you’ve been training. You’ve been climbing at Brooklyn Boulders and done some solid training every week– you feel stronger, more focus, sharp, and in tune with what your body can do. We think you’re ready to compete in our next Brooklyn Beatdown!

Sure, it’s scary. Competing is always a step up– but it can also provide a great litmus test to prove how hard you’ve been training as well as reveal how far you have to go, whether you’re starting at V0 or climbing V9’s and up.

Here are some tips to help you train and get ready to enter our second annual Brooklyn Beatdown and win BIG, before and during the competition:

Yoga & Meditation

Rock climbing requires focus. Taking at least a few minutes to establish a ritual to reign in your attention span will help you visualize how you’ll climb the problem. Stretching will help keep you loose and limber, and meditation does the same for your mind.

Visualize

Engage your brain as much as your forearms– imagine climbing in real time, and don’t rush!

First Touch

To minimize wasted energy and moves, try using each handhold the way you first touch it– no readjusting. This helps force you to visualize before you climb a problem.

Down Climbing Routes

Footwork is a difficult aspect of climbing to lock down– and usually, footwork when downclimbing can be awkward and clunky– but this forces you to practice maximizing weight onto your feet as well as helps you train in effective weight shifting and balance.

Fuel Your Body

Water, protein, simple sugars, and … coffee! Caffeine is known to give an edge to climber’s performances, but don’t forget to drink water. Healthy snacks like fruits and veggies are integral to keeping you light and full.

Stay Positive

Winning doesn’t have to be the end-all– the competition can be a test of how far you’ve come as well as how far you want to go! Competing with others doesn’t have to be a fear, but rather, an inspiration. Stay positive from the beginning to end– and don’t forget to have fun!
