Herbal Salves: DIY at Sunday High

Jacqui Daniels is the manager of The Herb Shoppe, located in Brooklyn. She explores the benefits of using all-natural salves to soothe sore muscles.

Herbal salves are a super easy, very safe, and effective way to treat your day-to-day aches and pains, bruises, cuts, and scrapes.

You can pick a natural salve up at your local apothecary or very easily make your own at home. Because there is barely any regulation on the skin care industry, even if a product is labeled as “all natural” that doesn’t mean it really is.

The FDA doesn’t believe that chemicals applied topically to the skin penetrate and cause damage or ill effects on the body. However, your skin is your largest organ! Almost anything you come into contact with the penetrate to some degree.

During the Sunday High herbal salve workshop I will be demonstrating how to make slaves and you will get a salve making kit to take home to make your own!

Some great herbs for salve making:

  • Yarrow: known as a vulnerary and styptic herb helping to heal wounds, stop bleeding, and disperse stagnant blood in bruising
  • Calendula: Another vulnerary herb helping to heal wounds. Very soothing and healing for irritated chapped skin as well. I like to think of Calendula as natures Antibacterial Ointment
  • Rosemary: Antimicrobial and very effective for achy muscles
  • St John’s Wort: Most noted for its effects on nerve pain and damage. Also great for burns and sunburns
  • Comfrey: Great for healing broken bones, strains, and sprains. It has a very fast healing action so you do not want to put this on an open wound as it can heal the skin too quickly and lock in an infection.
