Michelle is one of the strongest lady climbers to grace the walls of Brooklyn Boulders. Her beautiful photography, artistic skills, and sheer strength continue to inspire the rest of the community!

1. Who are you and how did you get to Brooklyn?
I am a photographer, and I got to Brooklyn by following a boy.

2. What keeps your hours occupied?
Playing with lights, playing with people, playing with rocks, playing with puppy, playing with wood grips.

3. How did you start climbing?
I wanted to try what I thought was a “low-impact” sport at Chelsea Piers after I injured my knee from running their track. I wasn’t a fan of the bouldering there, so I sought other climbing gyms in the city and found Brooklyn Boulders. I’ve been hooked ever since.

4. How did you start taking photographs?
I wanted to make moments larger than life, either by documenting their wonder as they passed or manufacturing them for the camera.

5. How has climbing impacted your life?
It’s taught me that just because something is hard doesn’t mean I won’t be able to succeed at it. That with enough volition, determination and courage, I can make anything happen. That fear of success exists. That fear is totally imaginary. That failing really hard usually means you’re on your way to succeeding. It has taught how to trust the unknown, how to trust myself. And the community. I’ve never been more grateful than for the people I’ve encountered in our climbing community. Despite the most random assortment of personalities and occupations involved, they are truly some of the most inspiring, beautiful and open-hearted people I’ve ever met, and I’m so happy I get to run into them all the time, whether at the crag or at the gym.

6. What are your current projects, on and off the wall?
On the wall, I’d love to get Free Willy in Hueco this year. Off the wall, I’ve been working on a photo series of highly-staged, large-scale, surreal scenarios in tableau vivant style, incorporating elements of fashion portraiture, mythical archetypes and 19th century European painting.
